Pills by Post – Abortion Pill treatment at home

You will have a telephone consultation and a comprehensive medical assessment conducted by a trained nurse or midwife, who will evaluate your suitability for treatment. If treatment is deemed appropriate and safe, you will receive abortion pills by post a few days later, or we can schedule you for an alternative treatment in the clinic. In some cases, a scan or additional in-clinic evaluations may be necessary before proceeding with treatment.

Medical abortion using the abortion pill

The abortion pill is a medication used to terminate a pregnancy. Its medical name is mifepristone. It functions by inhibiting the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining deteriorates, preventing the continuation of the pregnancy.

Surgical abortion is a minor procedure available in two types.

Vacuum aspiration uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy and can be performed with local anaesthetic (up to 14 weeks) for a quicker recovery, allowing you to leave the clinic and drive soon after. It can also be done with sedation or general anaesthetic (up to 15 weeks).

If your treatment is uncomplicated it won’t cause any issues with future pregnancies. There is no proven connection between abortion and future infertility, ectopic pregnancy or other pregnancy complications. Abortion can be associated with future pregnancies ending before the due date; this risk increases with each abortion but the medical evidence is not enough to show a connection. We use evidence based information to provide you with all the information necessary to make the decision that is right for you. A healthcare professional will explain all the known risks and complications associated with your treatment choice.

No - there is no proven link between breast cancer and abortion.

There are two main ways abortion can be done: the abortion pill (also called medication abortion) and an abortion procedure (also called in-clinic abortion).

Everyone is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to what type of abortion is better. Both types of abortion have a very low risk of serious complications. Which one is right for you will depend on a lot of factors, including what’s available closest to your location and how far along in pregnancy you are, since the abortion pill is generally only available earlier in pregnancy (and each provider has its own rules about how far into pregnancy they offer it–some may offer it through around 14 weeks of pregnancy and some may stop offering it much earlier in pregnancy).

Avoid any substances that will alter your mental state, like alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs, on the day of your abortion. If you’ve used these substances, the health care provider may not be able to offer you pain medication or may not be able to perform your abortion at all. If you’re concerned about pain or you’re feeling anxious, many abortion providers offer pain medication and medication for anxiety. Talk to your provider in advance about what they can do for you.
