What is abortion pills?
Safe Abortion Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion) up to 20 weeks
Medical abortion, sometimes referred to as “the abortion pill,” is a non-invasive method of ending a pregnancy. Up until 20 weeks of pregnancy, we frequently perform medical abortions using an abortion pill.
What to Expect with the Abortion Pill (Non-Surgical Abortion)
In the Office
A transvaginal ultrasound will be performed by a technician during your procedure appointment. A counselor will go over your choices and decision with you. They will also go over the drugs, dangers, and adverse effects listed in the Medication Guide. You will meet with a doctor after a nurse or assistant takes your vital signs, which include your temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. The doctor will inquire about your choice and address any queries you might have. After that, the doctor will give you one MifeprexTM tablet, which contains 200 milligrams of mifepristone, to take orally.A nurse will give you an injection if your blood type is Rh negative of Rhogam [PDF] in the recuperation area. You will receive a prescription for painkillers and be advised of our emergency contact information. Additionally, the doctor will give you a packet with 800 mcg of misoprotol to take home.
At Home
Twelve to twenty-four hours after taking the MifeprexTM tablet at AWC, the misoprostol should be taken. 800 mg of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, etc.) should be taken 30 minutes before to the misoprostol tablets. For the four pills to dissolve, they should be in the mouth for around half an hour. After half an hour, anything in the mouth should be swallowed. Bleeding and contractions should start 20 to 4 hours after taking misoprostol.
Bleeding & Cramping
With this approach, most people may anticipate quite severe bleeding, and passing some large clots is normal. Bleeding can vary from a little flow or spotting to heavy, like a period, and can last for several days or weeks. However, please contact AWC right once if you do not start bleeding within 24 hours or if you are soaking through two or more pads every hour for two consecutive hours. With this kind of abortion, cramping is common and can be far worse than a period. We’ll prescribe painkillers.
Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Weakness, and a Fever
These symptoms may occasionally be a side effect of taking misoprostol and Mifeprex pills. If you feel nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or weakness more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol, with or without abdominal discomfort, or with or without fever, call our office right once. After using misoprostol, a temperature of 101° F or greater may be typical. About an hour after the bleeding begins, your fever should stabilize. Consume a lot of liquids. Give the clinic a call if, after three hours, your temperature does not subside. After day 4, please contact our office right away if you get a fever that is higher than 100.4° F.
Follow-up Visit
Approximately 7-10 days after your first visit, you will return to AWC for a repeat vaginal ultrasound. Approximately 1% of people using the abortion pill method will not end their pregnancies and 2-3% will have remaining pregnancy tissue in the uterus at the time of the follow-up appointment. If the abortion is complete, you will discuss birth control options and future care. If you are still pregnant, you will most likely need surgery to complete the abortion.
After Your Medical Abortion
Post-abortion bleeding and cramping vary from person to person. You may bleed for two days to 4 weeks or have no bleeding at all. For many people, the bleeding stops and starts sporadically. There may be spotting until your next period. You may also find that you are passing large blood clots and have mild to moderate or even heavy cramping. All of this can be normal.
